St. Petersburg, FL (March 2009) - On Saturday, March 7th, the cities of Clearwater, St. Petersburg and Tampa came together to proclaim Human Rights Walkathon Day. Human rights are “the rights you have simply because you are human”, regardless or race, religion or gender. Everyone is entitled to them simply because they are human beings.
In honor of basic human rights, such as, “the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association,” and “the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community,” people from many diverse groups, backgrounds and religions all unite in the common and greater goal of championing for universal rights and fighting against the loss of them. The group Youth for Human Rights International passed out DVDs explaining the 30 human rights as set forth in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. A member of the Baha’i faith encouraged people to contact their congressmen to stand up for the Baha’i as they are being held captive in Iran for no other reason than the fact they belong to the Baha’i faith.
Clearwater, FL (March 2009) - All three of Clearwater’s Advanced Wastewater Treatment Facilities have received the George W. Burke, Jr. Safety Award from the Water Environment Federation. This is an award given to public wastewater treatment facilities to honor outstanding safety leaders in the industry. Jan Willis, a City of Clearwater Industrial Pretreatment Technician received the award for Industrial Pretreatment Operator of the Year in Florida’s Region IV. he Advanced Wastewater Treatment Facilities take in raw sewage and then treat it, turning it into reclaimed water. This water is then used for rrigation, thus reducing the need to irrigate with drinking water.
Tampa, FL (March 2009) - The Gasparilla International Film Festival came and went, leaving a very exhausted but pleased Eric Odum at the end of the after party at the Old Firehouse in Tampa. When I first spied the man who helped found the GIFF at the opening night party, he was the festival’s President. When we were actually able to sit down to an interview at the closing night party, he had turned his crown over to Chad Moore.
Eric Odum spoke passionately about his love of film, a love he developed when he lived in Brazil and was made to watch a Pedro Almodóvar film. He watched it over and over until he not only learned Spanish, but developed an appreciation of artistic cinema. His purpose in co-founding the GIFF was to fill the gap left by the absence of art house cinema in Tampa, to give local filmmakers a chance for exposure and bring to the Tampa Bay Area the films audiences wouldn’t otherwise get a chance to see, like Il Divo, the controversial biopic based on former Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti.
Fountain in the Park
Station Square Park Opens in Downtown Clearwater
Clearwater, FL (February 26, 2009) - Throughout history, fountains have served to fulfill both the practical and aesthetic needs of society. Public fountains were a social gathering point for people while they also collected water for drinking or bathing.
Today, in many great cities, fountains still symbolize artistic and social ideas. It is therefore only fitting that part of the City of Clearwater’s Revitalization Project included an invigorating fountain as the entrance point to Station Square Park.
Datil, New Mexico (March 2009) - There comes a time in most parents’ lives when they run up against a formidable wall called The Teenager. Opposed to anything that might be considered rules, most teens go through a period of utter rebellion. Why?
The usual scenario goes something like this: One is born into a family who has the best intentions for him and his future. However, he didn’t come with an Owner’s Manual. So his parents usually just go by the example of how they were raised. Yikes.
From an early age, he is carried around from place to place. He can’t talk yet, so he’s never consulted on whether or not he wants to go to Grandma’s house. Everyone is much bigger than he is. And that’s a little scary, since he is completely dependent upon these giants! When he finally starts talking, no one really listens. He’s “just a kid”, after all.
Tampa and St. Petersburg Proclaim March 7th Human Rights Walkathon Day
Tampa, FL (February 23, 2009) – Mayor Iorio of Tampa and Mayor Baker of St. Petersburg proclaim March 7th, 2009 as Human Rights Walkathon Day. The third annual Human Rights Walkathon will take place in North Straub Park, on the bay shore of St. Petersburg.

These rights include the right to an education, the end of modern day slavery and no racial or religious discrimination in addition to 27 other rights.
“Our purpose is to teach human rights to people of all ages. Through education we can end war, slavery, discrimination and intolerance”, says Linda Drazkowski, Chairman of the Human Rights Walkathon.

Residents Invited to Test Their Problem Solving Skills While Helping a Good Cause
TAMPA (February 12, 2009) – It’s part scavenger hunt, part wandering party, and a whole lot of fun. The Great Urban Race will be taking Tampa by storm on February 21, 2009, as participants navigate around the city solving clues and complete various challenges. The 2009 event is partnered with America’s Second Harvest, which helps Tampa Bay's less fortunate who suffer from hunger.
Teams of two will solve 12 clues and complete physical and mental challenges by walking, running or using public transportation. Participants may find themselves scavenging for random items, deciphering puzzles, or completing a physical challenge or game. The first twenty five teams to complete the race will have the opportunity to compete in the National Championship race for a chance at $10,000.
"The Great Urban Race is the perfect opportunity to discover Tampa in a new way,” said Joe Reynolds, Race Director. “For those looking for an extraordinary Saturday afternoon, the Great Urban Race will satisfy your desire for a new adventure.”
Since The Great Urban Race kicked off its first event in the summer of 2007, the response has been overwhelming. Many racers are now competing in various cities across the country while others have become avid local supporters. Raul Rumbaut and Heidi Steinhauer, who finished 16th in the 2008 Tampa race, said they “are counting down the days until the 2009 competition. We really a had a great time, hands down it was the best race we have ever competed in.”

Clearwater, FL (January 2009) - It was a chilly Sunday morning, just as dawn was starting to break and the runners were out bright and early in their hopes of being the first to complete the fourth annual Clearwater Half-a-Thon and third annual Five Mile Races, but the un-Floridian like temperature didn’t stop a flock of racers from warming up in preparation to cross the Clearwater Memorial Bridge.
Just as the sun poked its sleepy head over the bay, the runners lined up at the starting line at Coachman Park, stretching, jogging lightly in the parking lot or doing the “cold weather dance” as they waited in anticipation for the race to start.
“It’s going to be a good run across the bridge,” said Mike Newton, a participant. For him, the race is an enjoyable way to get his exercise. “This is fun. It’s a good way to start the New Year off.”
Downtown Clearwater
Farmer’s Market Moves
Clearwater, FL (February 2009) - The Downtown Clearwater Farmer’s Market has moved to Cleveland Street, between Ft. Harrison and Garden Avenue. Instead of being squeezed in a corner of the City Hall parking lot, its former home, the Farmer’s Market now has a block of its own every Wednesday from 10:00am until 2:00pm.
The new location of the market will bring more traffic to Cleveland Street and the downtown area, and in addition to supporting the local businesses that sell their goods each week, it will improve the commerce along this section of Cleveland Street. Tourists and locals will be able to walk through the middle of the street while they enjoy live music and sample fresh honey from Eden’s Nectar Honey or smoked fish spread from Island Fish.
“Bob and Daughter Produce” had a long line of customers reaching all the way to the other side of the street on the first day at their new location. “This is the first day back and it’s been absolutely awesome,” says the owner. And are you receiving more business? “Yes, definitely. People walking by see it where they didn’t see it before.”
