A Historic Log Cabin Restored at Florida's Heritage VillageHeritage Village recently was designated as one of the top five living history museums in Florida by "American Heritage" Magazine. The honor was announced in the magazine's Summer 2009 issue in the magazine's "Guide to Historic Sites in Florida" special section.

The selection of Heritage Village was based on extensive research, travel reviews and a thorough review of Heritage Village’s accessible and comprehensive website. “When making a travel guide, we look for what we think visitors would be interested in, mainly keeping American history alive and relevant, which is why Heritage Village seemed to be a perfect fit for our living history museums section,” Ellen Meltzer, associate publisher for American Heritage Publishing, wrote in an e-mail.

Other Florida living history museums honored by the magazine alongside Heritage Village include Colonial Spanish Quarter, Dudley Farm Historic Park, Historic Pensacola Village and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings House and Farm Yard.

The guide also offered Florida’s top five destinations in the categories of family-friendly history sites, forts and battlefields, famous homes and historic buildings, aviation and space history sites, Spanish colonial sites and Native American sites.

Heritage Village is a 21-acre living history museum. The treasure, located in Largo, brings to life more than 150 years of the area's history. More than 28 historic buildings have been restored, including a school, a church, a sponge warehouse, a railroad depot, and several historic homes.

Heritage Village is located at 11909 125th St. N. in Largo and is adjacent to Pinellas County Extension and the Florida Botanical Gardens. For more information, contact Heritage Village at (727) 582-2123 or visit www.pinellascounty.org/heritage.
