Super Boat RacesIn February, swarms of sports fanatics descended on the St. Pete/Clearwater area for the Super Bowl. This weekend, they’ll return for the Super Boat.

Presented by a host of sponsors including Bright House Networks and the Clearwater Regional Chamber of Commerce, the inaugural Clearwater Super Boat Offshore National Championship speeds into town October 2-4 for three days of family-friendly, full-throttle entertainment.

The races will take place on Sunday from 10 am-3 pm along the 5.1 mile course which runs from Pier 60 north along Clearwater Beach. Wrapping up this season’s series, the National Championship will crown the teams that have collected the most points throughout the year.

With 30-35 boats cruising upwards of 140 MPH off the coast of Clearwater Beach, Sunday’s contest is part of the Super Boat Series, one of powerboat racing’s most established organizations.

Super Boat’s traditional rectangle course brings the action close to the shore, offering speed enthusiasts prime views of the race.

The festivities begin Friday at Clearwater’s Coachman Park with food, drinks and entertainment from 3-9 pm for the race kickoff party. Fans can also meet the drivers and see the boats up close and personal at the park’s “Race Village.”

Saturday is jam-packed with events fit for the entire family.

Live music will rock Coachman from 9 am-7 pm, while kids can cast away at the Make a Difference Fishing Tournament, an event that benefits handicapped children, from 8 am-noon at Pier 60.

Spectators will get their first glimpse of the action on the water at noon with drivers holding practice runs until 6 pm. A rescue demonstration by the Coast Guard also takes place at noon.

The night winds down at Pier 60 with a concert by the Caribbean Chillers at 7 pm and an explosive fireworks show at dusk.

Events throughout the weekend are free, including Sunday’s competition.

With limited parking available on Clearwater Beach, fans are encouraged to park at one of several “off beach” locations and hop aboard the Jolly Trolley to and from Pier 60. Ambassador Limousine will also provide transportation on a 47-passenger bus along the same route.
