Sunscreen Film FestivalThe Sunscreen Film Festival is entering its fifth year in 2010. The past half-decade of the annual event has seen rapid growth and popularity, with a 600 percent increase in attendance from 2006 to 2009. Hosted by the St. Petersburg-Clearwater Film Society, the Sunscreen Film Festival was founded – at a kitchen table – by Tony Armer and Derek Miner, in 2005.

The primary goal of the Sunscreen Film Festival, according to their website, is “to encourage the creation, production, and exhibition of independent film in Florida through its educational programs and public screenings, thereby increasing awareness and support of local filmmaking as a cultural and economic asset.”

Joanie Sigal and Tom Godfrey performing at the Sunscreen Film Festival Fundraiser ConcertThe lights lowered on the audience, all eyes riveted on the bright stage when, suddenly, from the back of the Fort Harrison Auditorium, a familiar voice swelled, putting nearly 200 heads on a swivel. Eyes stayed glued as Paul Wilson, singer extraordinaire, weaved his way through the crowd to mount the stage singing, “Luck Be a Lady,” followed by “New York, New York.” It was in this spectacular fashion that the Sunscreen Film Festival Concert began on the evening of June 20th, 2009 at the recently refurbished hotel at 210 S. Fort Harrison Avenue in downtown Clearwater.

Sunscreen Film Festival Announcement Party. Photo by Wayne Cathel. St. Petersburg, April 1, 2009 - The Sunscreen Film Festival held the announcement party of their fourth annual festival on April 1st at Nova 535 in St. Petersburg.

Each year the event gets bigger and better. Last year, John Travolta attended the festival. This year, Patrick Wilson plans on attending (his film, Passengers, is the opening night film this year). Mayor Baker showed his support by putting in an appearance at the party while also talking about how excited he was for the Grand Prix in St. Pete that weekend.

The festival began five years ago when friends Derek Miner and Tony Armer got together while working on an indie film in their kitchen and decided to put on a film festival to meet more people in the industry. The first Sunscreen was held at Studio 620 and had many local filmmakers and a total of 600 people in attendance. This year’s festival will be held at Muvico Baywalk, and the festival’s 68 independent films come from all over the country and the world.
