Why Should You Read Good News?

These days, we are bombarded with bad news by the mainstream media. We can scarcely open a newspaper or turn on the TV without being faced with the latest “scare-story” about swine flu, or another bank failure, or another trillion-dollars added to the national budget’s deficit. Reports giving dire warning of bad times getting worse and no hope on the horizon tend to be prevalent. It seems as even the mundane stories get a negative spin on them.

Do you, like me, get a headache or feel depressed or stressed after reading your city’s #1 paper? It’s because the constant bombardment of bad news by the mainstream media scares people, cultivating a pessimism that at best doesn’t make life any more livable. Those exposed to negativity on a daily basis tend to fall into agreement with the negativity. For instance, if someone was told every day for a decade that he couldn’t succeed in life, do you think in 10 years he would be successful? Most likely not. It is a constant invalidation and assault on people’s hopes and dreams for a better future. Why expose yourself to it? Shouldn’t it be possible to inform yourself honestly and accurately about the world and affairs around you, without being bombarded with pessimism and negativity?

Clearwater, FL – (February 18, 2009) Construction on the long-awaited Station Square Park in downtown Clearwater is slated for completion soon. The park will officially open to the public with a short ceremony on Feb. 26 at 10am.

Located next to the Station Square Condominium building in the 600 block of Cleveland Street, the park has been undergoing a $1.26-million renovation since last July. It is the final portion of the first phase of the Cleveland Street Streetscape that has transformed the look of Clearwater’s downtown. Work crews are adding final touches including landscaping, decorative pavers, and an attractive fountain at its signature front entrance.

The park will provide a pleasant place for downtown patrons to relax, and city officials expect to use the park’s elevated stage to host small concerts and events.

CLEARWATER, FL (February 18, 2009)– Clearwater will close a two-mile stretch of Cleveland Street to motorized traffic Sunday, March 1 from 8am to 2pm for a multicultural street festival called "Sunday Ciclovía" (see-cloh-VEE-uh). Ciclovía is Spanish for “bike path". This event on March 1 was canceled due to bad weather and has been rescheduled for Sunday April 26, 2009.

The event route extends from Clearwater Harbor to Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard. Food vendors, activities for kids, bicycle and running organizations as well as exhibitors representing public service, fitness and green living organizations will line the street. Participants can bike, stroll, skate, or take part in exercise, sports and dance classes.

“Initially, Sunday Ciclovía was proposed as a community-building event for Downtown Clearwater’s East Gateway neighborhood,” said Tammy Vrana, an event coordinator. “The scope of the event grew when other downtown groups saw potential in the family-friendly and health-focused street festival to showcase downtown and local businesses.”
