Academy Award-winning, Grammy® nominated comedian, actor and writer Steven Wright will bring his distinctly deadpan delivery of ironic, witty philosophical and sometimes nonsensical jokes and one-liners to the historical Capitol Theatre in the Cleveland Street District in Downtown Clearwater on Friday, January 15, 2010 at 8 pm.
While performing the Boston area comedy circuit, Steven was first noticed by the producer of The Tonight Show and was invited to appear in 1982. He so impressed host Johnny Carson and the studio audience that Wright was brought back less than a week later. In 1985 Wright released his first comedy album I Have A Pony, which was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album. In 1989, he and fellow producer Dean Parisot won an Academy Award for their 30-minute short film The Appointments of Dennis Jennings, directed by Parisot and written by Mike Armstrong and Wright. He has also starred in a reoccurring role the television sitcom Mad About You and in 1990 his comedy special Wicker Chairs and Gravity aired.
This autumn, the Cleveland Street District in Downtown Clearwater will be alive with events and concerts. Many events are free, and all of them are fun. Check out the schedule below to see what is happening.
On July 10th, The Capitol Theatre brought Helen Mirren to Clearwater. Sort of. The National Theatre in London premiered an experimental new program called NT Live, in which a play is performed at the National Theatre in London while simultaneously broadcast live via satellite to theatres throughout the world.
The Capitol Theatre participated in this experiment by re-broadcasting the event a few days later, as the satellite equipment to receive the live broadcast was $8,000. (The Capitol Theatre is still in its fundraising for renovation stage, so this money is better spent on new seats or rafters).

“It’s moments like this that make me glad to be a city council member,” said John Doran as he stepped outside the newly-renovated Capitol Theatre, just after the opening night performance from classical pop pianist William Joseph.
Following the purchase of the Royalty Theatre by Ruth Eckerd Hall and the City of Clearwater, the venue has had a thorough cleaning and been officially renamed the Capitol Theatre. Its opening performance was on Saturday, April 4th — a performance from a very talented artist, William Joseph.
William is a dynamic and passionate classical pianist whose pop twist gives a fresh and youthful burst of energy to the genre. His music is emotional, dramatic and engaging. Discovered by David Foster in his native Phoenix, Arizona, he has gone on to release two remarkable albums and perform for the likes of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. “I’m very emotion-driven,” he says of his music. “I only write from feelings that I’m having. It’s not a story, it’s raw feeling.”
