VIDEO: Offshore Drilling or Offshore Racing?

There are talks of putting oil rigs off the coast of Clearwater Beach, but on Oct 2nd through 4th, something else was looming offshore: Super Boat.

The 1st Annual Clearwater Super Boat National Championships were a success, benefiting the already established and lucrative tourism industry by bringing an estimated 20,000 people to Clearwater Beach, filling hotels, and picking up a traditionally slow month for tourism. Additionally, Super Boat required no tax dollars to produce.

There are talks of bringing Super Boat back to Clearwater next year. Luckily, boats racing at up to 200 mph did not have any oil rigs in the gulf to bump into!

Watch this video to view our coverage of the races.

Which would you rather have offshore super boats or oil rigs? Leave your comments below.

"No Way to Off Shore Drilling & Hurray to Clearwater Super Boat National
Championships! (As long as there is no harm to come to the wildflife,
dolphins...)

I can personally assure everyone that blending powerboat racing with tourism was
the idea, Marc Granet clarified it best:

"The ENTIRE concept to race in
Clearwater was Ray Pusillo's idea ...period.
Frank and team took it to their
contacts and made it happen. I was at the
initial meetings , Ray did not have
the HP to get it done with OSS, he
brought it to JC . Frank C added the
political and capital punch,...it got
done. Ray then worked to promote the event
and assist where necessary.

Congrats on a successful event and thank you for
the kind words"

Thanks Marc and everyone in Clearwater
who stepped up for this!

I would rather have boat racing! We have and have had the teckology to get 60
miles to a gal. of gas. Inventers have done this for over 20 some yrs. If we
take the pattins out of the safes, we would have to drill off our shores.

I worked in the off-shore industry and I can assure you that the rigs and Pipes
ALWAYS leak. I guarantee that the beaches will be fouled within 2 years

Boat racing aligns with the tourist vocation of clearwater beach. Offshore
drilling does not. I prefer boat racing.
