2009worldtourlogo.jpgTAMPA BAY - MAY 1-3    Youth For Human Rights International conducted the annual International Human Rights Petition Signathon to create grassroots support for mandating that human rights, specifically the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, be taught to every child in school.

On December 10, 1948 the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the "Universal Declaration of Human Rights". The pursuit of human rights was a central reason for creating the UN. World War II atrocities and genocide led to a ready consensus that the new organization must work to prevent any similar tragedies in the future.

However still today approximately 600,000 to 800,000 victims annually are trafficked across international borders worldwide, and between 14,500 and 17,500 of those victims are trafficked into the U.S., according to the U.S. Department of State. These estimated include women, men and children. Victims are generally trafficked into the U.S. from Asia, Central and South America, and Eastern Europe. Many victims trafficked into the United States do not speak and understand English and are therefore isolated and unable to communicate with service providers, law enforcement and others who might be able to help them. As humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard stated, "Human rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream.

To help make human rights a reality the Tampa Bay Chapter of Youth for Human Rights collected over 1500 signatures last weekend alone. The Youth For Human Rights International will use the petitions collected by all Chapters to urge the applicable authorities to mandate human rights education on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in schools. Using the footage from the events conducted, the Youth For Human Rights International will be making a presentation to the United Nations.
