Sunscreen Film Festival Announcement Party. Photo by Wayne Cathel. St. Petersburg, April 1, 2009 - The Sunscreen Film Festival held the announcement party of their fourth annual festival on April 1st at Nova 535 in St. Petersburg.

Each year the event gets bigger and better. Last year, John Travolta attended the festival. This year, Patrick Wilson plans on attending (his film, Passengers, is the opening night film this year). Mayor Baker showed his support by putting in an appearance at the party while also talking about how excited he was for the Grand Prix in St. Pete that weekend.

The festival began five years ago when friends Derek Miner and Tony Armer got together while working on an indie film in their kitchen and decided to put on a film festival to meet more people in the industry. The first Sunscreen was held at Studio 620 and had many local filmmakers and a total of 600 people in attendance. This year’s festival will be held at Muvico Baywalk, and the festival’s 68 independent films come from all over the country and the world.

But the Sunscreen Film Festival still focuses on strengthening local talent. This year was the first year they tried their film school program, The Sunscreen Film Festival Film School. Sunscreen also offers acting workshops and industry seminars during the run of the festival.

As part of this year’s festivities, there will be a screening of shorts by local filmmakers at 1:00pm on the Sunday, May 3rd. Some of the shorts this year will include:

Chocolate Chip Egg Whites, by Brittany Perkins, which was made through the Sunscreen Film Festival Film School. It is about a chocoholic who decides to run a marathon.

One Last Stand, by University of Tampa senior, Alan Mehanna. It tells the story of an Arab man and an American woman who are placed in a secluded room and must decide whether or not to reset the world.

Focus, by Jesse Newman.  This film shows what happens when a young man is driven to stare relentlessly at a brick wall. The man eventually develops a following of those who find purpose in his extreme focus.

A Minute Too Late is a horror/thriller. Creator Cliff Gephart won the award for Best Florida Film last year for his TV pilot “Pawn’d”.

Other films to look for are Passengers, starring Patrick Wilson and Anne Heche, Route 30, a fun, quirky comedy and Hampshire, a ghost story, which is the film’s first feature horror film.

The 4th Sunscreen Film Festival will take place April 29th through May 3rd in St. Petersburg. Check their website www.sunscreenfilmfestival.com for the full schedule and information on special workshops and seminars.
