Island Earth Days to Take Place April 17th and 18th on Honeymoon Island

Island Earth DaysThe Friends of Island Parks, a non-profit which supports Honeymoon Island State Park in Dunedin, will hold their annual event, Island Earth Days, on April 17th and 18th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on both days.

Island Earth Days is “designed for all age groups so that they may enjoy nature based activities, eco-friendly arts and crafts, food and music, in the beautiful natural setting of Honeymoon Island State Park,” says Melanie Metcalf of the Friends of Island Parks. There will be a nature village, eco-friendly vendors, guided nature walks, children’s games, and a climbing wall as well. Hawaiian Outriggers will be present on Saturday, and kayak races will take place on Sunday.

Honeymoon Island was the most visited state park in 2009, and is likely to repeat this in 2010. According to Metcalf, theOsprey Trail at Honeymoon Island State Park presence of Honeymoon Island State Park and Caladesi Island State Park has an economic impact of $71 million.

2010 marks the 75th anniversary of the creation of the Florida Park Service. What once began as a handful of parks, now extends to over 160 parks, each once containing environmental, cultural or historical significance. The Florida Sate Parks Service has one the Gold Medal for Best State Parks in the Nation twice.

The event is free with paid park admission. Money raised during Island Earth Days goes to Honeymoon Island State Park.
